Description
💧 Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to dry slightly between waterings. During Malta’s hot summer months, water more frequently, especially if grown in pots. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.
☀️ Light
Crossandra grows best in bright, indirect light or partial sun. In Malta, it benefits from morning sun with protection from the strongest afternoon heat, which can scorch the leaves and flowers.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This evergreen, bushy plant produces glossy dark green leaves and colourful flowers from spring through autumn, with blooming often continuing for much of the year in Malta’s mild climate. Regularly remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a neat appearance.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A pot with good drainage is essential to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants. Reduce feeding during the cooler months when growth slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Crossandra is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for most pet-friendly homes. As with any ornamental plant, it is best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Crossandra is mainly grown for its ornamental flowers rather than its air-purifying properties. Its lush foliage and long-lasting blooms add colour and freshness to indoor and outdoor living spaces.
