Description
This architectural powerhouse features massive, glossy, burgundy-to-bronze leaves that look like ornamental banana plants. In the peak of summer, these are topped with vibrant, fiery red flower spikes. They are the perfect solution for creating privacy screens, bold backdrops, or dramatic centerpieces in large patio pots.
Key Features for Malta:
Sun & Heat Lover: These are tropical plants that absolutely adore the Maltese sun. They perform best in Full Sun.
Wind Resistance: While they love the sun, their large leaves can “shred” in strong coastal winds. Plant them in a spot sheltered from the strongest “Grigal” or “Majjistral” winds.
Bloom Time: Long-flowering from June through October. In Malta’s climate, they may even continue blooming into early November.
Size: These are vigorous growers, reaching heights of 120–180 cm in a single season.
Expert Planting Tips for our Customers:
Water is Key: Cannas are “water-loving” plants. During the hot Maltese summer, they will need regular, deep watering. If growing in pots, ensure they never dry out completely.
Feeding: They are “heavy feeders.” To maintain those lush dark leaves and continuous flowers, use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks throughout the summer.
Planting Depth: Plant the rhizomes horizontally, about 10 cm deep, with the “eyes” (growing points) facing up. Space them about 40–50 cm apart to allow for their wide growth habit.
No Need to Dig: Unlike in Northern Europe, Canna rhizomes can stay in the ground all year round in Malta. They will go dormant in winter and sprout back even stronger next spring.
Position: Full Sun (best for leaf color) to Partial Shade.
Hardiness: Fully Hardy in Malta (Zones 8–11).
Soil: Rich, moisture-retentive soil. They aren’t picky about pH but love organic matter/compost.
