The Iresine herbstii, commonly known as Bloodleaf or “Chicken Gizzard” (though the former sounds much better for marketing!), is a spectacular foliage plant that brings an almost neon intensity to a garden.

💧 Watering
Iresine is a “thirsty” plant compared to many Mediterranean favorites. It prefers consistently moist soil and will “faint” (wilt dramatically) the moment it gets too dry. Don’t worry—it usually perks right back up after a drink. In a Maltese summer, you may find yourself watering it daily if it’s in a pot.

☀️ Light
To get that incredible, glowing red color, it needs bright, indirect light or dappled sun. Too much shade will make the colors muddy and the stems “leggy.” However, be careful with the intense midday sun in July and August; it can scald the leaves. A spot with bright morning sun is the “sweet spot.”

🍃 Foliage / Growth
The leaves are translucent, meaning when the sun shines through them, they glow like stained glass. It has a soft, herbaceous growth habit and can get quite bushy. To keep it compact and prevent it from getting “stretched,” pinch off the tips of the stems regularly—this encourages it to branch out.

🪴 Potting Mix
It loves a rich, organic potting soil that can hold moisture while still allowing excess water to drain away. A mix of high-quality compost with a little bit of perlite to prevent compaction works best.

🌿 Fertilizer
Because it grows relatively fast, it appreciates a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the spring and summer. This keeps the foliage lush and the “blood red” pigment vibrant.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Iresine is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats! It’s a great way to add high-impact color to a household with curious pets without the risks associated with plants like Caladium or Pothos. However, if you notice and symptoms please consult with a vet immediately.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While not a “heavyweight” air purifier like a Sansevieria, its high transpiration rate helps increase humidity in its immediate vicinity. It’s mostly valued for its psychological “boost”—there is nothing quite like that vibrant red to lift the mood of a room or terrace.
