The Sansevieria ‘White Princess’ (a striking cultivar of Dracaena trifasciata) is the ultimate “architectural” plant for a modern Maltese home. It is a rare and highly sought-after variety featuring stiff, sword-like leaves with beautiful, crisp white-to-cream vertical variegation. It combines the legendary “indestructible” nature of the Snake Plant with a bright, high-contrast aesthetic.

💧 Watering
The #1 rule for this plant is: when in doubt, don’t water. In Malta’s humid winters, it may only need water once a month. In summer, water only when the soil is 100% dry all the way to the bottom. It stores water in its thick, succulent leaves, making it perfectly suited for those who occasionally forget their plant-parent duties.

☀️ Light
While it is famous for surviving in low-light “windowless” corners, the ‘White Princess’ needs bright, indirect light to maintain its stunning white variegation. In low light, the white parts may turn a dull green or the plant may stop producing variegated leaves altogether. Avoid direct, scorching midday sun, which can “bleach” the leaves.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features upright, leathery leaves that grow in a tight rosette. It is a very slow-growing plant, which is actually a benefit for indoor decor as it won’t outgrow its space quickly. It spreads via underground rhizomes, eventually sending up new “pups” to fill the pot.

🪴 Potting Mix
Needs a very gritty, fast-draining mix. A dedicated cactus and succulent soil with extra pumice or perlite is ideal. Because they have a relatively small root system for their height, they prefer to be in heavy pots (like terracotta) to prevent them from tipping over and to help the soil “breathe.”

🌿 Fertilizer
Hardly needs any. A weak dose of cactus fertilizer once in the spring and once in mid-summer is more than enough. Over-fertilizing can lead to weak, floppy growth.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Sansevieria is toxic to dogs and cats if ingested. It contains saponins which can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Fortunately, the leaves are quite tough and leathery, making them less “tempting” to chew than softer plants, but it’s still best kept on a stand.

🌬️ Air Purifying
It is a superstar of the air-purifying world. Not only does it filter toxins like benzene and formaldehyde, but it is one of the few plants that produces oxygen at night (CAM photosynthesis). This makes it the perfect plant for a bedroom or a small apartment.
