Caring for geraniums

Geraniums are common outdoor flowering plants in Malta. A geranium is an easy-to-grow perennial, which is often used in borders, rock gardens, and as a ground cover.

Geranium is a diverse group containing types that grow in a range of conditions, from full sun to shade. Flower colors include pink, blue, white, and purple. Most geraniums blooms in midsummer, although some species will bloom in spring and fall. Plants grow 6 inches to 4 feet tall, depending on the variety. Caring for geraniums is easy and requires low maintenance.

.Geraniums have been a gardener’s favorite for well over a century. The old-fashioned standard for beds, borders, and containers, geranium is still one of the most popular plants today. Traditional bedding types love hot weather and hold up well to dry conditions; many offer colorful foliage.

Geraniums may be grown in multipurpose compost and may given universal all purpose plant food. A good compost mix should have excellent drainage , good aeration and good water retention capability. A good mix must be light enough to permit watering ffrquently on hot weather without danger of oxygen deficiency and heavy enough to retain enough moisture for the plant. (Miracle Grow is suggested for optimal blooming). Since these plants receive sunlight, the demand for water is established. So the more sunlight received, the more water and fertilizer is needed.

Many plants tend to become ill shaped and unattractive if left on their own. This may be avoided by pinching back new growth where indicated or pruning if heavier trimming is necessary.Make sure to establish a wet to moist dry watering cycle. It is not to over water your geraniums as very often they are called because of improper watering.

Checking for the plant’s need of watering is a must. This may be done by looking at the soil and scratching the soil surface with your finger or alternatively use a moisture meter. If the plant is barely moist or dry below the surface layer, it need watering.
