Caring for Hortensia

The Hortensia is a popular plant in the month of may. It is a hardy and woody plant, requiring special care and a great deal of lime free water. One may obtain lime free water by boiling it. The best method of watering is to dip the pot in a half-filled bucket and leave it there until air bubbles have stopped coming out of the soil. Do not leave the plant soaked in the bucket. This may damage the rooting system. Alternatively, one may also water from the top. This plant needs good light (but no sun) during the day and cool air at night. After the flowers wither, prune back each of the branches to leave only two or three pairs of good leaves on each one.

In early June, it is a good idea to put the pot outdoors, in the garden. If that is not possible, put the pot inside a larger pot and surround it with peat. Fertilize weekly using alternately complete chemical fertilizer and one iron sulphate. In September, place the plant in a cool, dark place. The leaves will fail off. Keep watering lightly. By early January, the plant should be moved to a sunny room and growth will resume. Begin fertilizing again only when the leaves have attained their normal size.
